Creative Technologies Lab

The Creative Technologies Lab is an interdisciplinary space for experimentation, prototyping, and applied research at the intersection of design, technology, and digital media.

The lab supports the development of interactive installations, physical and digital prototypes, spatial experiences, and emerging media projects, while fostering collaboration between students, researchers, and external partners. As part of
FH Münster University of Applied Sciences, the lab is part of the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and based at the Technology-Campus Steinfurt. It combines creative exploration with technical implementation and serves as a platform for teaching, innovation, and cross-disciplinary exchange.

Teaching in the Lab

Teaching in the Creative Technologies Lab is shaped by problem and project-based learning, interdisciplinary exchange, and hands-on experimentation. Students explore the connections between design, technology, and digital media through making, reflection, and research-oriented practice.

Courses focus on human-centered design, rapid prototyping, and the development of ideas from concept to implementation. Closely connected to the Creative Technologies Bachelor program at FH Münster, the lab provides an active environment for applied and future-oriented learning. Its teaching profile also includes international formats such as the DTI Summer School program.

Research in the Lab

Research in the Creative Technologies Lab is organized around four connected fields: Narrative Systems and Emerging Technologies, Site-Specific Installations, Global Heritage Documentation, and Societal Impact.

Across these areas, the lab examines how media and technology can be used to shape new forms of experience, communication, and engagement. This research does not focus on technology alone, but on its relevance for cultural, educational, and societal contexts, including questions of public space, memory, and participation.

In collaboration with partners from academia, industry, and cultural institutions, the lab develops applied and future-oriented research that contributes both to innovation and to wider social discourse.

Team

The Creative Technologies Lab is shaped by the entire team. Together, we combine expertise in media design, human-computer interaction, systemic and sustainable design, software development and hardware prototyping and applied innovation. Our work connects teaching, research, mentoring, project development, documentation, and collaboration with external partners. Depending on the semester and the project context, the lab is also supported by student research assistants, tutors, and temporary collaborators, creating an interdisciplinary team that develops, tests, and realizes projects in practice.

Say Hello.
